The Waikato Service & Campus Redevelopment Project comprises two major redevelopment sites: Thames Hospital on the Coromandel Peninsula and the main Waikato Hospital in Hamilton, New Zealand. The integration of some of the existing buildings required a major refurbishment to include a new Intensive Care Unit adjacent to the new Operating Theatres as well as a new Short-Stay Ward straddling the Emergency Department and the existing Inpatient wards. While the Waikato campus has, like many major urban hospitals grown organically over many years, the new S.C.R. project builds on the strengths of the existing campus. This project gives a clarity to the site, its entry and way-finding within the hospital enabling the hospital to continue to grow over many years to come.
MSJ produced the first Master Plan for this Campus based on a holistic approach to health demands and the local urban fabric.
